THE SCOUT ZONE
After watching every game of week one there were a couple of wide receivers that caught my eye. These are wide receivers that are potential WR 4’s or WR 5’s that may be free agents in your league?
Nate Burleson
He was targeted 11 times for 7 receptions, 74 yards, and 1 touchdown. Deion Branch didn’t look good in camp or the preseason so I doubt he’ll be much of a factor this year upon his return. The other viable receiving options are T.J. Houshmandzadeh and the second year standout TE John Carlson. With Matt Hasselbeck back healthy along with their strength of schedule it’ll be interesting to see what Burleson will be able to accomplish this year. He looked like Hasselbeck’s number one wideout in week one. Even though they did play the lowly Rams defense.
Earl Bennett
A confused Jay Cutler targeted his old Commodore teammate13 times in week one. Bennett had 7 receptions, 66 yards, and no touchdowns. I look for Bennett to become Cutler’s safety valve. Especially facing one of the league’s top defenses in Pittsburgh in week two. Let’s not forget Cutler’s last play at Vanderbilt was a game winning TD pass to Bennett that beat Tennessee. Can they repeat more of the same at the NFL level? Only time will tell.
Mark Clayton
He was targeted 8 times. He finished with 5 receptions, 93 yards, and no touchdowns. I’ve read multiple articles from Baltimore insiders that they plan on passing more this season. I believe they certainly can with second year man Joe Flacco as their talented gun slinger. Clayton’s a talented receiver who could put up starter worthy fantasy numbers. If you’re in need of a wideout think about picking him up if he’s available.
Chansi Stuckey
With a rookie quarterback in Mark Sanchez throwing the ball this year it’s tough to say what wide receivers will be consistent in this offense. Jerricho Cotchery will have the best shot at doing so. Sanchez looked good in week one but he was playing a porous Texans D that my old high school team could score against. Anyways Stuckey was targeted 8 times for 4 catches, 64 yards, and 1 touchdown. He’s someone to watch.
Kenny Brit
This former Rutger wideout looked impressive in his pro debut. He’s a big talented target for Kerry Collins to have moving forward. He was very impressive to watch in college and I believe he will be the same in the pros. It’s really just a matter of when? Keep an eye on Nate Washington’s expected return. This may take away from his targets? He was targeted 6 times for 4 catches, 85 yards, and no touchdowns.
